Nightstand Lamps
Bedside lamps that look as good switched off as switched on: solid wood, glazed ceramic, glass and real marble, in sizes that actually fit a nightstand. Most are sold as singles, so pair them however you like.
Start with the height of your nightstand, not the lamp
The measurement that decides everything is the distance from the top of your nightstand to your eye when you are sitting up against the headboard. Pick a lamp a little shorter than that, so the bottom of the shade sits at or just below eye level and you never look straight at the bulb.
This is why the often-quoted 26 to 30 inches is misleading. That figure assumes a nightstand level with the mattress. Most nightstands sit higher, and then a 12 to 16 inch lamp lands the light exactly where a taller one would overshoot.

Which switch suits a lamp beside a bed
There are four kinds in this range and all four feel different in the dark. An inline switch has to be found on the cord, a pull chain you can locate by feel, a push button sits on the base, and a touch lamp responds anywhere on its body.
Touch is the easiest to use and the only kind here that dims steplessly. If you want light you can turn down before sleep, look at Touch and Dimmable. The rest switch on and off, and then the bulb decides the brightness.

Bulb, brightness and color temperature
Seven of our lamps take a standard E26 bulb that is not included, so you choose it. Buy 2700K warm white rather than daylight: anything above 5000K works against winding down, which is exactly the wrong job for a lamp next to a bed.
The USB and rechargeable lamps have an integrated LED, so there is nothing to pick. Three of them do switch color temperature: the Stone and the Vessel from 2700K to 6000K, and the Noir between 3000K, 4500K and 6500K.

Mains, USB or rechargeable
Nine lamps plug into the wall with a US plug and run on 110 to 120 V. Four run on USB with an adapter included. Three are rechargeable and need no cable at all.
On a full nightstand the cable is often the real problem rather than the lamp. A rechargeable one can be picked up and carried, and nothing has to be routed behind the bed.

One lamp or a pair
Two identical lamps on either side of the bed make a bedroom look finished, which is why stagers insist on a matched set. Every lamp here can be bought as a set of 2, with the second lamp at half price.
A single lamp makes sense when you only have one nightstand, or when you deliberately want one piece to be the thing you notice. Doubling that one would waste it.

Common questions
How tall should a nightstand lamp be?
Short enough that the bottom of the shade sits at or just below your eye level when you are sitting up in bed. Measure from the top of the nightstand to your eye and pick a lamp a little shorter. On a nightstand level with the mattress that means 26 to 30 inches; on a taller nightstand, 12 to 16 inches is usually right.
What color light is best beside a bed?
2700K warm white. Daylight bulbs at 5000K and above work against winding down, which is the opposite of what a bedside lamp is for.
Do I need a dimmable bedside lamp?
Dimming is the feature reviewers name most often in this category, because reading light and sleeping light are different levels. Four of our lamps dim: three by touch and one by a push button on the cord.
Are bulbs included?
Not on the mains lamps, which take a standard E26 bulb you choose yourself. The USB and rechargeable lamps have an integrated LED, so there is nothing to buy.
Which lamps work without a cable?
The Noir Cordless Dome, the Stone Cordless Marble and the Vessel Cordless Ceramic. All three recharge over USB and the charger is included.
Do these lamps fit a US socket?
Yes. Every mains lamp has a US plug and runs on 110 to 120 V, and the USB lamps ship with a US adapter.
